This team needed a shakeup, and although it’s small, it’s still a shakeup. The Rangers today announced the recalling of forward Carl Hagelin and John Mitchell from the Connecticut Whale (AHL). Both could be available for tomorrow’s afternoon tilt with the Washington Capitals, but no guarantee both will be in.
Hagelin, 23, is tied for the Whale lead in goals with seven, and tied for second with 13 points in 17 games. Hagelin played college hockey at the University of Michigan, and was drafted by the Rangers in the sixth-round in 2007.
Micthell has seven goals of his own, and leads the team with 14 points.
Had to figure a move was coming, with the imminent suspension of Andre Deveaux for his blatant elbow in last night’s 2-1 loss to the Florida Panthers. Either way, I would have demoted Deveaux, who plays about five minutes a game and contributes nothing offensively. There are other’s on the team who are willing to drop the gloves and who can produce more in other facets of the game on a nightly basis.
I’m excited to see Hagelin get a chance to play with the big boys. Will he dominate games? No, but might as well see what he’s made of. The team is starved for offense, and a guy with Hagelin’s speed can make some things happen.
