According to a tweet by NY Post columnist Larry Brooks, the New York Rangers will be placing winger Sean Avery on re-entry waivers tomorrow. If no team claims him, Avery would be eligible to play in Thursday night’s game against the Anaheim Ducks.
The story was originally broken by a tweet from WFAN host Boomer Esiason, who said a source from within the organization tipped him off.
This decision is pretty brash, but I like it. This team needs a little shakeup, and no Avery isn’t a superstar, but he brings something to the team they’re lacking right now: energy. Coach John Tortorella, who isn’t an Avery supporter by any means, said the team was both mentally and physically “lethargic” following their loss against the Toronto Maple Leafs Thursday night.
I wonder if the chants and signs of adoration for Avery swayed the organization’s opinion. Probably not, but we can dream that a professional sports organization listened to the wants of its fans for a change.
